Relative Age Effect Rule

Updated for Competitions in 2023

Boys are no longer eligible for the Relative Age Effect rule (as of 1st January 2023). Boys must play in their correct age group or one age group above. There will be no exceptions whatsoever.

Girls are eligible to be an RAE player if they are born on or after 1st January the year above (i.e. a player born on 1st January 2010 is eligible to play in a U12 team).

There is a maximum of two RAE players per team.

2023 Relative Age Effect Cut-Off Dates:

  • U8 (players born 2015/16) - 1st January 2014

  • U10 (players born 2013/14) - 1st January 2012

  • U12 (players born 2011/12) - 1st January 2010

  • U14 (players born 2009/10) - 1st January 2008

  • U16 (players born 2007/08) - 1st January 2006

For whatever reason, if a player is deemed to be ineligible for an RAE position, the Premier Academy League will inform the relevant Academy that the player will need to re-register for a team in their actual age group. If an Academy is found to have abused the RAE rule, penalties may be imposed including termination of their Premier Academy League membership for repeat offences.
